Dental Concerns For The Elderly - Treatment Options

Dental care for the elderly is very important in order to prevent serious dental and health concerns. However, many do not seek proper care and checkups due to insurance and financial concerns.

Many insurance policies impose severe limits on the amount an elderly patient may use toward dental care on an annual basis. Still, others simply have a hard time getting to the office in order to receive the proper care.

The lack of dental cleaning maintenance can lead to several dental concerns for the elderly. These may include decaying and receding gum lines, gum disease, oral cancers, and recurrent decay found around older fillings.

Poor diets can also contribute to declining dental health in the elderly. When undergoing treatments, side effects from prescription medications are also possible if an unqualified dentist is performing them.

In order to prevent dental concerns for the elderly, it is suggested that they drink plenty of water and use oral hygiene products which contain fluoride. Brushing and flossing twice a day can also help to prevent further decay. Perhaps a good idea is to invest in an electronic toothbrush or flosser to assist in these activities.

Elderly dental patients should also report all medications to their dental provider, as well as advise them of any upcoming surgeries. Some procedures unrelated to oral health can cause concerns in the mouth, and dental care should be sought before and after to prevent undue damage.

Alcohol and tobacco use should be eliminated or at least greatly reduced. These substances can contribute to decay, cancers, and declining gum health if not addressed properly.

Dental care for the elderly should include regular visits to the dentist, proper daily at-home care, and total transparency between the doctor and dentist when it comes to medications and procedures. Elderly dental health is just as important as it was in younger years, but should include concessions accounting for aging bodies and declining health.
